128-Bit Encryption comes to the Free BitWise

Posted at August 19, 2004 03:04 PM in BitWise .

We are very pleased to announce that effective immediately (no client upgrade required), the Free BitWise now employs 128-bit Blowfish encryption on your messages, whiteboards, file transfers, etc (and the voice chats if you're using the alpha version). This is a tremendous boost beyond the previously-used 64-bit Blowfish as we strive to continue to protect your privacy.

The Pro BitWise encryption is unchanged; Pro users continue to have the option to use up to 448-bit Blowfish (256-bit outside the USA/Canada).

Enjoy!

Why the increase in encription? Sounds good, just wondering why.

The increase was finally legally possible because we were granted an export classification from the US Department of Commerce. Previously, we were unlicensed and therefore limited to 64-bit Blowfish / 512-bit RSA. The license now allows us to export up to 256-bit Blowfish / 2048-bit RSA.

This is not an appropriate location for political comments regarding the policies of the US government and whether or not they are good or bad; any such posts will be immediately deleted. My blog is a politics-free zone. :) (Do not take this to mean that I necessarily agree with the export laws.)
