99% of you are probably rolling your eyes (justifiably!) at such a "news flash" because it is such an obvious statement. If you're a part of the 1% that are shocked by this announcement, by all means, please read on.
One way or another, I end up talking with some of BitWise's new users on a daily basis. If you're not familiar with BitWise, it's a free-for-personal use instant messenger that is one of my jobs. In any event, I hear all sorts of things: praise, skepticism, and criticism just to name a few. Last night, however, I had a really wonderful exchange. Read on:
New User: this s**t takes up almost 6 megs of ram
New User: 64bit blowfish, wtf, i thought it was 448
New User: f***this
Me: You're complaining about 6 megs of RAM? That's pretty light, what do you expect?
Me: 448 bit is only available in the Pro/Business version
New User: 3 at the most, like miranda, and 64bit, can u turn this s**t off atleast
I would have proceeded to offer this kind gentleman (I'm betting the ranch it was a man) a full refund for what appears to be one of the most miserable experience of his life, except that he'd already signed off. I never knew that a piece of free software could elicit such strong, powerful emotions. It's not like I made him install it or it use.
User feedback is an essential part of BitWise for me; without users, software is useless. I'm sure that this person thought that he was being really helpful [sarcasm] but honestly--does anyone feel better after a conversation like that? What wonderful people we have in this world! If you get that worked up over a harmless piece of freeware... I hope you're having a really happy, fulfilling life.
So, back to the news flash: free software is free, and if you don't like it, don't use it! What a concept...
a)i also thought that 6mb was very good? unles this guy is on an ancient system that only has 32mb, and i suppose thats possible.
b)64bit, not 448; who cares, its encrypted, it doenst seem like this guy has anything good to keep secret anyway
c)and now he is complaining he wants to turn it off? so because 64 is not as good as 448, he'd rather have 0 encryption?
anyway, good to see that there are some new friendly users flocking to bitwise.
People do this nonsense with some sort of weird...well, proselytization in mind. You'll notice he mentioned Miranda.
I don't see what his issue is with Blowfish 64, either. If he could show me just one person whom has the motive, resources, and ability to crack his conversations within a reasonable time then sure, maybe I'd agree with him. Too bad it'll never happen.
I'm assuming he referenced Windows Task Manager for his Miranda memory figures. I don't know what kind of system he's running but here are my results with Miranda: http://crap.teamm3.com/miranda.png
These people exist everywhere. They'll evangelize their favorite products simply to justify the use of them to themselves. I'm pretty certain the only solution is to light them on fire.
Some people are just plain odd...
I'm always pointing out to people on Soul-seek, when they say "It's s***" because the server goes down every now and again and it stopped them leaching 10 cds off one user, for one hour. That it's freeeee.
Some people are just, what is it you Americans say..."donkey-holes..." ahhh yes thats it.
;-)
The Miranda reference was funny. If he was so happy with Miranda anyway, why bother to look for something else?
It seems lots of people think that the world is owed to them on a silver platter and get all angry when they don't get it. Maybe this guy's mother made him eat his vegetables at dinner and he was angry (oh the horror!). ;)
This is what I resieved from someone while I was offline. I was added to his list because of superBuddy.
[08/10/04, 07:22:45 pm] hey

[08/10/04, 07:22:58 pm] hey
[08/10/04, 07:23:02 pm] kkk
I don't think he noticed that I was not online...
