This is the "bring your little brother or sister to campus" weekend at the local University, and I was reminded of one of my long-standing questions about life.
Assuming that you are the younger of only two children, is it better to have an older brother or an older sister? If you like, I can make it even more complicated by asking that question separately for the younger child being a boy vs. being a girl.
I have two much older siblings so I don't have a good answer based on any personal experience, but I'll share what I think in the comments in a few days.
I don't have any brothers/sisters. I dunno which I would prefer...a hot sister would be nice...and if she ever got lonely.........
I think if you don't have a younger sibling, you can always borrow a niece, nephew or other stray kid ;)...assuming you know any that are likeable.
I'm an only child. My observation is that there's natural competition between same gender siblings, and also mother-daughter and father-son relationships.
An older sister can end up mothering her younger sibling(s). If she does this to a little sister, there may always be that nurturing feeling and sense of the older one's authority. There may also be resentment. If older sister/younger brother, the boy may learn how to relate to females through the relationship - and that's natural with a boy and his mother as well.
Older brothers of girls might be protective of the girls, especially in their relationships with males. I've also seen brothers that fight with each other, but when any is threatened by an outsider, they stick together.
If I were able to choose what older sibling I'd want, I'd choose a brother. I generally like males as people better than I do females. Of course, there's always an exception to the rule.
Well, I have an older brother and we get along well. I can't if an older sister would be better. probably just differnent.
