Don't bother stealing my mail anymore

A word of warning to any budding entrepreneur: registering a business is your ticket to an untold number of credit card solicitations arriving via mail. I put up with this deluge for a while, but one day when I got four solicitations in the same day, I decided that it was time to take some action.

Instead of just shredding the offers, I started calling the 800 numbers and requesting that my name be removed from the mailing lists. Every call so far has been successful and the operators have been very courteous about processing my request. I recently received an American Express mailing and learned something really great.

If you want to opt out of all pre-approved credit card offers that originate from one of the credit bureaus, you can go to a web site and request removal: http://www.optoutpresrceen.com. Just fill out your basic information and your name can be removed from all mailings that originate from a credit bureau database. Totally awesome.

I should say that making these individual requests to stop getting junk mailings has had a huge impact on the number of solicitations I receive. I used to get at least one a day (sometimes two or three), and now I'm down to maybe one a week. Not only does this mean I spend less time opening and shredding these offers, but it also means that there is less chance of fraud occuring if someone decides to swipe my mail. Plus, I just generally feel less harassed. :)

Too bad getting rid of email spam isn't so easy.

Thanks, I just opted-out myself and my husband. Also went to the DMA to stop junk mailings, but they charge $5.00 to complete the request online. However, one can print an opt-out order with a tracking number, sign it and mail it in, so I'm doing that too. No charge to do it that way.
