Sorry, I couldn't resist wrapping up with a last San Francisco is a lot like thread now that I'm safely back in Ohio. It was great to be away but it is also nice to be back!
The LinuxWorld presentations were definitely a success, and I'm glad I went because I got to meet many of the people involved with the book on the publisher's side as well as interact with many interesting people. I was encouraged by the number of people that had heard of wxWidgets, though it still isn't enough! ;) The folks from the publisher were thrilled to tell me about how well the book is selling, and they were also very pleased to see me taking such a proactive role is promoting the book at the show. I'll let you in on a little secret: part of my motivation to sell a copy was so that I could autograph it! I think I finally had it sink in that I co-authored a book, and that alone was worth the trip. :)
While I was gone, there was other good news about the book: we got our first Amazon review (4 out of 5 stars!) and we also learned that the book is already ready for a second printing, and that was just a week after it's official release! As the editor told me at LinuxWorld, the book is practically selling itself. In my typical modest fashion (ha!) I didn't emphasize that Julian and I had already been taking a very active role in promoting the book. ;)
The Alcatraz tour on Thursday was very interesting--the island has a fairly rich history. I also did not realize that only the one building at the very top was the actual cellhouse; the rest of the buildings were all support like housing for the officers and their family, power generators, docks, etc. The view of San Francisco from Alcatraz is also spectacular, though it sure would be nice if the dang fog would ever lift! By the end of my trip I was beginning to think my camera had a cataract or something.
Hats off to my partners for quietly keeping the RMS BitWise afloat during my vacation, and though I was online from time to time, I was mostly hand-off. But now I am back, so it's full steam ahead again. I'll have some exciting news on Monday about lighting another boiler on this ship.
But for now, enough horrible ship metaphors; I'm going to stop before I hit an iceburg and sink. [Blows horn.]
