To LASIK or not to LASIK, that is the question

Posted at April 25, 2006 04:32 PM in Personal .

Last Friday, I was evaluated for the LASIK vision correction procedure and found out that I was a good candidate. That is, I have sufficient corneal thickness, my eyes are healthy, my vision is correctable with LASIK, etc. My vision is fairly bad (about -4) and while I don't really mind glasses, they can be inconvenient (such as at the water park, amusement park, when exercising, etc.) and it would be nice not to be dependent on them.

The high price tag is a pretty strong deterrent, but I also need to decide if I want to take the risks of having the procedure. I know it's become very safe over the past 5 years or so, but there are always risks. Does anyone have any sage words that can help me decide if LASIK is worth the expense and risk?

Or, anyone looking to get rid of $4,200 burning a hole in his or her pocket can also feel free to cover the cost. :) Hey, I can ask, right?

I never liked the idea of these surgeries. brrrrr.

I have a far-sighted eye anyway, so these aren’t really an option to me to egin with, but I’ve been wearing glasses since I was like 2 — I absolutely don’t mind mine.

Go to a LASIK clinic that's been there a while, and you're golden. 8)

I've been wanting to get that for a long time. I can't get it yet because my eyes are still getting worse. So I hope to get it someday, also when I have more money and can actually afford it. Currently my eyes are at -5.5 so slightly worse then yours... I've been wearing glasses my whole life. Well in 8th grade I switched to contact lenses which are great. I can see much better with them then I ever could with glasses.
Anyways I find them a hassel and would prefer good vision which I hope to get someday.

I had my lasik done in jan 2006. I had horrible vision now I have 20/15. One bad thing about it is that my night vision isn't as strong as in natural light. If you have the cash I highly recommend getting it done. Be sure though to get it done by someone bona fide. I went to the eye surgeon that was voted the best in San Antonio. I paid a premium but worth it.
